Origins of the Naming of Ecuador
The origin of the name of Ecuador is from Spain. When the Spaniards colonized the land they called it "el ecuador" which translated means "the equator". Ciudad Mitad del Mundo Located in San Antonio parish of the canton of Quito is the "Ciudad Mitad del Mundo" or "middle of the world city" where a monument that was built to mark one of the two places where the equator divides the world into half. The "Mitad del Mundo" was built between 1979-1982 and it was made using iron, cement and covered with polished volcano rock called "Andesit". The monument stands 30 meters (98.43 ft.) tall. There is a museum located inside of monument that contains many ancient relics and artifacts. |
